We couldn’t believe it, but it’s 100-percent true. It’s been nearly 10 years since the last time the Elite Series has been to Lake Okeechobee.
Actually, the Elite Series has never been down there, because BASS didn’t call the tour that back in 2003. That’s how long it’s been.
So how do you go about predicting favorites on a body of water that 1) is notorious for having temperamental fish 2) many pros haven’t fished competitively on in nearly a decade 3) most pros know well? We’re glad you asked.

Talk about a double-edged sword.
On one hand, it’s nice to see the Major tours heading to new venues like Hartwell and the St. Johns River. On the other, it makes it a tough task to pattern pros with so little data (only three Major or Minor events have been held on the St. Johns since 2000).
But we will try our best. So let’s dive into the BASS Elites Series on the St. Johns River.

Winning the Bassmaster Classic has a way of accelerating a pro’s career.
In the case of Chris Lane, he may not have needed the extra horsepower. His career was already speeding up in the right direction.
While few if any had Lane as a favorite heading down to the Classic at the Red River, according to the numbers, perhaps we all should have. After taking his lumps his first five years on the BASS Elite Series, Lane has emerged as one of the hottest pros in the sport, even before his Classic victory.

Not necessarily guys who live there, but guys who excel in those early season events in the Sunshine State. So we decided to look into it.

Every tournament has its favorites to win. Some look at local pros as the favorites. Others go by past performances. Yet others simply go on hunches.
We go by numbers, and we have plenty of them. Hence the series “Data Overload.”
Before every Majors event, we want to use our database of stats to figure out who really are the favorites at any given event. We want to know if locals really hold the edge, or if time of year makes a difference with certain pros. We don’t want opinions. Just stats.
