We said if anyone had a chance at ending the revolving door at No. 1 it was Kevin VanDam.
Well, he’s finally made his move in the Majors World Ranking.
When Bass Rankings launched, people were beside themselves that KVD was ranked third. Our argument (and really, it wasn’t an argument. Just facts) was that his poor beginning to the 2010 season was weighing him down. However, with the 2010 Clear Lake event dropping last week (VanDam’s worst tournament in the last two years), combined with his eighth at Lake Okeechobee this past weekend, VanDam jumped from third to firmly into the No. 1 position, with his best time of year about to begin.

Edwin Evers is not giving up his No. 1 ranking without a fight, though he may be fighting a losing battle.
For the briefest of moments last week, Andy Morgan took over the top spot. The 2010 Elite Series event on the California Delta dropped off, and with it, Evers’ 25th-place finish. That was enough to dip his average just below Morgan’s.
Then Evers went and replaced the event with a 14th at the St. Johns River over the weekend. So much for that. Evers now holds a 4-point lead over Morgan for the top spot. Plus, the 2010 Clear Lake event will drop off this week (Evers finished 23rd), so his average will only improve. That’s how good Evers has been over the last two years. A 23rd finish actually hurts his average.
Before we talk more about the St. Johns River event, we should probably touch more on the dropping of the California Delta event. Particularly, that it signals the start of Kevin VanDam’s surge toward the top.

Every tournament has its favorites to win. Some look at local pros as the favorites. Others go by past performances. Yet others simply go on hunches.
We go by numbers, and we have plenty of them. Hence the series “Data Overload.”
Before every Majors event, we want to use our database of stats to figure out who really are the favorites at any given event. We want to know if locals really hold the edge, or if time of year makes a difference with certain pros. We don’t want opinions. Just stats.
Are you ready? Then let’s start crunching for the Bassmaster Classic.

Crowning an angler of the century right now would be like naming a winner to a marathon after the first mile. There is still plenty of fishing to be done.
However, with Bass Rankings recently expanding its database to include every Major- and Minor-level event since the turn of the century – pushing the site’s total to more than 26,000 anglers – we figured can at least now crown an angler of the first decade.
