We couldn’t believe it, but it’s 100-percent true. It’s been nearly 10 years since the last time the Elite Series has been to Lake Okeechobee.

Actually, the Elite Series has never been down there, because BASS didn’t call the tour that back in 2003. That’s how long it’s been.

So how do you go about predicting favorites on a body of water that 1) is notorious for having temperamental fish 2) many pros haven’t fished competitively on in nearly a decade 3) most pros know well? We’re glad you asked.

Edwin Evers is not giving up his No. 1 ranking without a fight, though he may be fighting a losing battle.

For the briefest of moments last week, Andy Morgan took over the top spot. The 2010 Elite Series event on the California Delta dropped off, and with it, Evers’ 25th-place finish. That was enough to dip his average just below Morgan’s.

Then Evers went and replaced the event with a 14th at the St. Johns River over the weekend. So much for that. Evers now holds a 4-point lead over Morgan for the top spot. Plus, the 2010 Clear Lake event will drop off this week (Evers finished 23rd), so his average will only improve. That’s how good Evers has been over the last two years. A 23rd finish actually hurts his average.

Before we talk more about the St. Johns River event, we should probably touch more on the dropping of the California Delta event. Particularly, that it signals the start of Kevin VanDam’s surge toward the top.

Talk about a double-edged sword.

On one hand, it’s nice to see the Major tours heading to new venues like Hartwell and the St. Johns River. On the other, it makes it a tough task to pattern pros with so little data (only three Major or Minor events have been held on the St. Johns since 2000).

But we will try our best. So let’s dive into the BASS Elites Series on the St. Johns River.

There is nothing in our sport quite like the Bassmaster Classic.

Between the Kevin VanDam talk of him going for three Classic wins in a row to the tough conditions, this year’s Classic on the Red River was a fun one to watch, as they all are.

In the end, Chris Lane notched his first Major win in the biggest tournament of the season, officially placing him among the elite in the sport in terms of reputation.

As for how he and the rest of the field rank after the event, now that’s a different story.

In case you didn’t hear, some guy named Kevin VanDam is the new No. 1 ranked angler in the world after last weekend. We guess it’s kind of a big deal.

In all seriousness, though, it is a big deal, which is why we devoted Monday’s Movers & Shakers article to the news.

Now, it’s Randall Tharp’s and the rest of the competitors’ turns from the FLW Tour Open at Lake Okeechobee.

Considering Chris Lane and Brandon Medlock have each won two season openers in the last three seasons, we started thinking about the best anglers in the state of Florida. Not necessarily guys who live there, but guys who excel in those early season events in the Sunshine State. So we decided to look into it.
